Thereβs something about a New Year that inspires us all to reset. Commit to better habits, make better routines, and just strive to be better overall. When I was traveling non-stop in the past, I didnβt make a strong enough effort to take care of myself. Wellβ¦things have definitely changed. After my travels came to a screeching halt in March of last year (paired with the emotional rollercoaster of the rest of 2020), nothing has taken a stronger focus in my life than making my health and wellness a priority. If you are also looking to take better care of yourself, here are four simple tips to get you started!
Develop better eating habits: Eating healthy doesnβt have to be boring and you certainly donβt have to limit yourself to (boring) salads to be healthy. Get creative by trying new recipes of your favorite foods in healthier versions and experiment with new cooking methods of the things you already know and love (for example: bake instead of fry). Try spiralizing your veggies, roasting them, or discovering new spices. Some alternatives you can incorporate include coconut aminos, herbal coffee, ghee, coconut butter, matcha, and kombucha. Donβt be afraid to try new things, no matter how unfamiliar you are with them or how weird they sound.
Take your vitamins: If eating the recommended amount of fruits and veggies is hard for you, this is a big one. While there is no vitamin that can replace a healthy diet, taking vitamins can help supplement it. I used to only take a womenβs multivitamin, but have started incorporating others like collagen (for better skin elasticity), biotin (for stronger nails and hair growth), immune boosters (to strengthen my immune system), and digestive vitamins (bloating!) for the added benefits. Drink more water: If for no other reason, you should drink water because your body is made of water. Your brain, heart and other organs will function better. I try to drink at least a half gallon of water a day, and have found that using mason jars or large drinking bottles help to keep me on track. Other great side effects drinking more water can do for you is lower levels of stress and anxiety. Itβs one of the easiest ways to improve your overall health!
Move your body: This goes hand in hand with developing better eating habits, but the key is to listen to your body. You donβt have to do an intense workout; itβs important to just move your body in a way that feels good for you. If you donβt want to go for a run or take a high impact class, that is totally fine! Instead, go for a long relaxing walk, or take a yoga, pilates, or cycling class. Just like eating, moving should feel good and make you happy, and if it doesnβt you need to switch to something that does.
